Coronavirus : fears of UK third wave

Popular European holiday destinations Spain, Greece, Italy and France are unlikely to make the UK’s travel “green list” in the next update, scheduled for 7 June, despite the justice secretary’s claim that ministers are “very keen to see as many countries as possible” on it.

“It means more opportunities for holidaymakers, and the ease of transport that clearly makes a holiday a much more pleasant experience, so we’ll continue, where we see the evidence, to add countries,” Robert Buckland told Sky News earlier.

Boris Johnson told MPs last night “quite a few” countries - including Malta, Fiji, Finland and various Caribbean islands - are in contention to be added to the list, reports The Daily Telegraph.

It comes amid growing concerns of a potential third wave of coronavirus infections in the UK, after a leading infectious disease expert said on Thursday that Britain was on the brink of one.

Professor Andrew Hayward, a Sage member who teaches at University College London, told BBC Breakfast yesterday he is “very concerned” about the spread of the B1.617.2 Covid mutation. The latest data suggests cases related to the so-called Indian variant have more than doubled in the past week alone across the UK.
